CROWNS & BRIDGES.

For teeth that need more than a filling.

OPEN MONDAY TO SATURDAY, FROM 7:30AM

GENERAL DENTISTRY

RESTORED, PROPERLY.

A crown protects and rebuilds a damaged tooth, made to match the teeth beside it. A bridge replaces a missing tooth, anchored to its neighbours. Both are custom-made with our ceramist, and shaded to belong in your smile.

And where an implant would be the more conservative answer to a gap, we’ll tell you. Honest comparisons are part of the plan, not an upsell.

A crown is usually the answer when a tooth has lost too much structure for a filling to hold. A large old filling breaking down, a crack, or a tooth that has been root treated and needs protecting.

A bridge is one way to replace a missing tooth, by anchoring a replacement to the teeth either side.

Whether either is right for your tooth is assessed at your appointment, and we’ll always say if something less involved would do.

Usually two appointments. At the first, the tooth is shaped to make room for the crown and digitally scanned, and a temporary goes on while the permanent one is made. At the second, it’s fitted, checked against your bite and cemented in place.

Preparing a tooth for a crown means removing some tooth structure, and that part is permanent. The risks and considerations are worth reading before you decide.

Crowns and bridges are quoted after we have looked, because how much of the tooth is left changes the work involved. Our starting prices are in the price guide, and you’ll get an itemised treatment plan with the item codes so you can confirm your rebate with your health fund before committing to anything.

If you’d like to spread the cost, we can talk through payment plan options and their terms.

CURIOUS ABOUT OUR PRICING?

Every smile is different, so every treatment plan, and every price, is too. Our full price and service guide gives you a clear starting point, with starting prices and the payment plan options available.

YOUR VISIT.

Usually two appointments, a couple of weeks apart.

We look at the tooth and talk you through what would actually suit it: a crown, a bridge, or something else entirely, with the pricing for each set out clearly so you can compare them properly.

The tooth is shaped and digitally scanned, and your crown or bridge is made by our ceramist. A temporary keeps the tooth protected and looking normal while you wait. Preparing a tooth this way removes some tooth structure, and that part is permanent, so the risks and considerations are worth reading before you decide.

The fit is checked against your bite and the teeth beside it, adjusted where it needs to be, then cemented in place. You’ll leave knowing how to look after it.

NERVOUS PATIENTS

THERE'S NO WRONG WAY TO FEEL ABOUT THE DENTIST.

If visits make you anxious, tell us before you book rather than on the day. We can take breaks, explain as we go, or stop if you need to. Happy gas is available here if it would help. Where more is needed, twilight sedation and general anaesthetic are arranged with an independent specialist anaesthetic team, assessed and quoted separately. You can read more about the sedation options and the risks and considerations that come with them.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

ASKED & ANSWERED.

If your question isn't here, please get in touch with us. We're always happy to help.

A filling replaces a small amount of missing tooth. A crown covers the whole tooth and holds it together, which is what’s needed once there isn’t enough healthy structure left to support a filling. Where the smaller option will last, that’s the one we’ll do.

A bridge is quicker and doesn’t involve surgery, but it means shaping the two teeth either side of the gap to carry it. An implant leaves those teeth untouched but takes longer and costs more up front. If your neighbouring teeth are healthy and unrestored, an implant is usually the more conservative answer, and we’ll say so.

It’s shade-matched to the teeth beside it before it’s made, and built by a ceramist rather than picked off a shelf. Worth knowing that porcelain won’t lighten if you whiten later, so if whitening is something you’re considering, it’s better done first.
It varies, and it depends on the tooth underneath as much as the crown itself. Grinding, gum health and how well the margins are kept clean all affect it. Crowns commonly give many years of service, and we’ll give you an honest estimate for your own tooth rather than a number that sounds good on a website.
Not always, but sometimes. Shaping a tooth for a crown can irritate the nerve, and occasionally a tooth that was comfortable before needs root canal treatment afterwards. If your tooth is already heavily damaged the chance is higher, and we’ll tell you where yours sits before you commit.
It’s still your tooth, and it can still decay at the edge where the crown meets it. That’s why the margin matters and why check-ups continue after crown work. A crown protects a tooth, it doesn’t make it immune.

Shaping a tooth for a crown removes tooth structure and that can’t be undone. The nerve can be irritated and occasionally needs root canal treatment afterwards. A crowned tooth can still decay at the margin. Bridges mean involving the teeth either side of the gap, which is why an implant is sometimes the better answer.

The full list of risks and considerations is worth reading before you book.

The tooth is numbed before any shaping starts, so the appointment itself shouldn’t be painful. Tell us if you feel anything and we’ll stop and add more.

Afterwards, the tooth can be tender or sensitive to hot and cold for a while, particularly to temperature, and that usually settles. If it doesn’t settle, or it gets worse, call us rather than waiting it out.

Call us and we’ll get you in. Keep it somewhere safe and bring it with you, because it can often be recemented. Don’t try to glue it back yourself, and avoid chewing on that side until we’ve seen it.

Brush and floss as normal. A bridge needs cleaning underneath as well as around, and we’ll show you how at the fit appointment. If you grind your teeth, a night guard protects the work, and check-ups matter more rather than less once you’ve had crown work done, because the margin is where problems start.
