The order to do things in, and what you probably don't need at all.

Before you book anything
the mistake is almost always timing.
Not the treatment. The timing.
Most difficult wedding cases look the same. Someone decides in April to do something about their teeth, the wedding is in June, and there is no room left for anything to settle or be adjusted.
Dental work has a rhythm you cannot rush. Gums settle, shades even out, bites need small changes a fortnight later. None of that is a problem a year out. All of it is a problem at six weeks.
So this is a running order rather than a treatment list. Start wherever you actually are.
The part nobody sells you
you may not need anything at all.
A clean removes surface staining from coffee, tea and red wine. For a lot of people that is most of the difference they were imagining, and whitening handles the rest.
Veneers and bonding change shape, not just colour. If shade is what is bothering you, they are a lot of treatment to solve something smaller already solves.
We will tell you that at a consultation if it applies. Better to hear it a year out than three weeks out.
PLANNING BACKWARDS FROM THE DAY
THE TIMELINE.
How much you can fit in depends on how long you’ve got. This is roughly how it maps out, though what suits your teeth is worked out at your consultation, not by a calendar.
12 months out or more →
Now: This is the window where everything is still on the table. If straightening is something you’re considering, it fits comfortably from here, and so does any general work like fillings or gum treatment that’s better finished before cosmetic work starts. Book a check-up first so you’re planning around what’s actually there.
Not yet: Whitening and bonding. Both sit better closer to the day, and bonding is shade-matched to your teeth after whitening rather than before.
6 to 9 months out →
Now: Straightening is still realistic for many cases from here, though not all of them, and that’s the call your consultation makes rather than a timeline. Get any general or gum work underway so it’s well finished before the cosmetic stage begins.
Not yet: Locking in final shade decisions. Your teeth can look different by the time the groundwork is done, so choosing a shade now often means choosing it twice.
3 months out →
Now: This is usually when whitening starts, and when any bonding or veneer work gets planned around the shade you settle on. If you’ve been in aligners, wearing your retainer properly matters from this point.
Not yet: Starting anything that needs a long run of appointments. From here the aim is finishing what’s already begun, not opening something new.
6 weeks out →
Now: Finishing touches. Any whitening top-ups, a final polish on bonding, and a hygiene appointment booked so it lands comfortably before the day rather than on top of it. If whitening has left your teeth sensitive, this is enough room for that to settle.
Not yet: New shape changes. Anything involving a lab or several appointments is tight at this point, and tight is how mistakes happen.

Now: Very little, and that’s deliberate. A clean and polish if it isn’t already booked, and keeping up whatever routine you’ve been on.
Leave it: Whitening, because the shade keeps settling for a couple of weeks afterwards and sensitivity is hard to predict. Same goes for new products you haven’t used before, and any cosmetic work that isn’t already finished.

how long does whitening actually last?
The shade drifts back over time rather than disappearing at a fixed point, and how quickly depends heavily on coffee, tea, red wine and smoking. Most people who whiten for a wedding do a course beforehand and a short top-up closer to the day. If you have take-home trays you keep them, so top-ups only cost the gel.
should the wedding party whiten too?
Only if they want to, and each person needs their own assessment first. Whitening is not suitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding, generally not for under-18s, and is postponed where there is untreated decay or gum disease. It is not something to organise as a group booking without everyone being looked at individually.
what if i have fillings or crowns at the front?
They will not change colour when you whiten, so if your natural teeth lighten around them they may end up standing out more than they do now. That is worth knowing before you start rather than after. Sometimes the answer is replacing them to match afterwards, which is a separate cost and needs to be in the plan from the beginning.
is it too late if my wedding is in two months?
Not for a clean, and usually not for whitening or a small amount of bonding. It is late to be starting anything that involves a laboratory. Come in and we will tell you honestly what fits, including if the honest answer is that the sensible version is smaller than what you had in mind.
what about photographs?
Worth mentioning at your consultation, because engagement shoots and pre-wedding photography often happen months before the day itself. If your photographs are in March and your wedding is in September, your timeline is really March.
what should i know before i start?
Every treatment mentioned here carries risks and is not suitable for everyone. Whitening commonly causes temporary sensitivity. Veneers and bonding involve permanent changes in some cases and need maintenance and eventual replacement in all of them.
