Composite bonding uses tooth-coloured resin, shaped by hand directly onto your teeth. From edge bonding on a single chipped tooth to composite veneers sculpted across your smile, it can repair chips, close small gaps and rebuild worn or uneven edges, often in a single visit, with little to no preparation of your natural tooth.
Because bonding adds to your teeth rather than removing tooth structure, it is a conservative way to change how your smile looks. Which is exactly why we like it. Like any cosmetic treatment it carries risks and considerations worth reading before you decide.

01 | CONSULTATION & SHADE MATCH
We start with a conversation and a proper look at your smile and bite. The resin is matched to the shade of your natural teeth. If whitening is on your mind too, we’ll sort the order together, so the shades sit with each other.
02 | SCULPT & SHAPE
The resin is layered and sculpted by hand, directly onto your tooth. You’re part of it: we check the shape against your smile as we go, and what you tell us changes what we do.

03 | POLISH & REFINE
The bonding is polished to a natural finish and your bite is checked. You leave the same day with simple care notes, and bonding can be adjusted or repaired later if it needs it.

How much does bonding cost?
It depends on how many teeth are involved and how much shaping each one needs. Edge bonding on one or two teeth sits at the lower end. Composite veneers across the front of your smile sit higher, because there is more material and more chair time in it.
Our price guide sets out starting prices, and we’ll send it straight to your inbox. At your consultation you will get an itemised quote in writing showing the total cost of your plan, not a weekly figure on its own. Payment plans are available, interest-free or low-interest depending on the plan, and their terms are set out on our pricing page.
Does it hurt?
Most bonding is done without an anaesthetic, because in most cases nothing is being drilled or removed. The resin is added to the surface of the tooth rather than cut into it.
Some people feel a little sensitivity, particularly where a tooth is already worn or where a small amount of shaping is needed, and anaesthetic is available if you would rather have it. If you are nervous about dental work generally, tell us before we start. We would rather slow down than push on.
How long does bonding last?
It varies, and it depends more on you than on us. Composite is softer than porcelain and softer than natural enamel, so it wears, it can chip, and it picks up stain over time. Grinding your teeth, biting your nails, opening things with your teeth, and a lot of coffee, tea or red wine will all shorten its life.
Looked after well, bonding usually gives you several years before it needs polishing, repair or replacement. We will give you an honest estimate for your own case at your consultation, rather than a number that sounds good on a website.
Bonding or veneers, which is right for me?
They do different jobs, and the honest answer is that it depends on how much change you want and how long you want it to hold.
Bonding is added directly onto your teeth, usually in a single visit. It costs less up front and it can be repaired or added to later. It is softer, so it stains and wears sooner.
Porcelain is made in a lab and fitted at a second appointment. It holds its colour and resists wear for longer, and it costs more.
Neither is the better treatment in the abstract. Which one suits you depends on your teeth, your bite and what you want from it, and that is what the consultation is for. If bonding will do what you are after, we will say so.
Edge bonding or composite veneers?
Edge bonding works on the biting edges only, so chips, wear and uneven lengths. It is the smaller version, often just a few teeth, and it is usually done in one appointment.
Composite veneers cover the whole front surface of the tooth, so shape and shade can be changed more fully. More teeth, more material, more chair time, and a higher cost.
Plenty of people come in expecting one and leave with a plan for the other. We will talk you through both against your own teeth before you decide anything.
Will it match my natural teeth?
The resin is shade-matched to your teeth before we start, and it is built up in layers rather than laid on as one flat colour, which is how depth and translucency are worked in.
One thing worth knowing: a close match to the teeth you have now is a different thing from a whiter smile. If you want the shade lifted as well, whitening usually needs to happen first, because bonding will not lighten afterwards. We will plan the order with you.
Can bonding be whitened?
Honestly, no. Whitening works on natural enamel. It will not lighten composite, porcelain, crowns or fillings.
That is why the order matters. If you are considering whitening at all, it is worth doing before the bonding, so the resin can be matched to your lighter shade. Whiten afterwards and your natural teeth will lift while the bonding stays exactly where it is.
What should I know before I start?
Composite is softer than porcelain, so it can chip, and it picks up stain from coffee, tea and red wine in a way porcelain does not. It will need polishing, repair or replacement at some point. It will not lighten if you whiten later. And if you grind your teeth, bonding on the biting edges may not be the right call without addressing the grinding first.
